Introduction:

Following on from the Semester course "Art History 1", this course is a more detailed investigation of the great historical works of art in architecture, painting, sculpture and minor arts from to the late 16th century through to the present, including a detailed history of 20th and 21st century representational artists.

Course Structure and Content:

Students will study the constantly-changing world view of this period through the works of such artists as Michelangelo and Rembrandt, and also through such movements as Romanticism, Impressionism, Expressionism and Cubism. The course will include a history of 20th and 21st century representational art and the fields it has influenced and been influenced by, covering in particular the work of important representational fine artists such Pietro Annigoni and Andrew Wyeth, and important illustrators such as Howard Pyle and Norman Rockwell.

Learning Objectives:

After the completion of the course, students will be able to: *Deconstruct a work of art in terms of its appearance; *Relate a work of Western art from the Renaissance through contemporary periods in relation to the culture in which it was created; *Become aware of the history of art from the Renaissance to the present; *Develop critical thinking skills in regards to the critical analysis of art; *Develop the means to create written analysis and critique and other written documents as a way of understanding and interpreting art.
